Background of the Study
Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is one of the leading causes of cardiovascular diseases, strokes, and kidney failure globally (Abdullahi et al., 2024). In Nigeria, hypertension has become a significant public health issue, with its prevalence rising steadily due to urbanization, lifestyle changes, and inadequate awareness of the condition (Ogah et al., 2023). Nurses play a crucial role in the management of hypertension, from early detection and diagnosis to ongoing monitoring and patient education. They are integral in educating patients on lifestyle modifications, medication adherence, and managing the emotional aspects of living with a chronic condition like hypertension.
In Taraba State, a region with a mix of urban and rural communities, access to healthcare and hypertension management may vary significantly. Nurses, being the first point of contact in many healthcare settings, are often responsible for screening and monitoring blood pressure, educating patients on managing the condition, and providing long-term care strategies (Sulaimon et al., 2023). However, the extent to which nurses in Taraba State are equipped with the knowledge and skills to effectively manage hypertension remains unclear. This study will evaluate the role of nurses in hypertension management and identify factors that influence their ability to provide optimal care in Taraba State.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the growing burden of hypertension in Taraba State, the role of nurses in its management has not been comprehensively evaluated. Factors such as inadequate training, limited resources, and the need for further professional development may hinder the effectiveness of hypertension care provided by nurses. Furthermore, there is a lack of standardized approaches to managing hypertension across healthcare settings in the state. This study seeks to assess the role of nurses in hypertension management and identify areas for improvement to enhance care delivery.
Objectives of the Study
1. To evaluate the knowledge and skills of nurses in managing hypertension in Taraba State.
2. To assess the extent of nurses’ involvement in hypertension prevention and management strategies in Taraba State.
3. To recommend strategies for improving hypertension care and management among nurses in Taraba State.
Research Questions
1. What is the level of knowledge and skills among nurses regarding hypertension management in Taraba State?
2. To what extent are nurses involved in the prevention and management of hypertension in Taraba State?
3. What strategies can be implemented to improve the management of hypertension by nurses in Taraba State?
Research Hypotheses
1. Nurses in Taraba State have insufficient knowledge and skills to effectively manage hypertension.
2. The involvement of nurses in hypertension management is limited due to inadequate resources and training.
3. Providing additional training and resources will significantly improve the role of nurses in hypertension management in Taraba State.
